Becoming
a Citizen of the World
To succeed in a
multi-national organization, you must
be able to understand and work with
the expectations and assumptions of
different cultures. Canadians are
different from Americans; Americans are different
from Chinese. Similarly, you can’t reach
the Japanese market in the same way
you would reach the New Zealand market.
What motivates other people? What
are their nuances? What factors do
we share in common?
Books and lectures
can give a sense of other perspectives,
but they are limited. There’s
no substitute for being there: learning
the history, meeting the people, tasting
the food, hearing the sounds. In the
process, you learn not just about
another culture, but reflect on your
own culture as well. Plus, just as importantly,
you gain great insights into yourself.
Studying abroad isn’t just about
laying the foundation for a successful
career. It’s about becoming
a citizen of the world.
